One day trip to Balchik

Balchik is a small town, like a breath of fresh sea with the fishing port huddled under white chalk cliffs, it is a discreet holiday place that feels far from Albena, whose lights can be seen with the naked eye at night over the bay .

The main attraction here is the palace, with its wonderful botanical gardens, a few kilometers west, along the seafront promenade.

Queen Mary’s Summer Palace and Botanical Gardens

At the western end of the seafront in front of the sea, this palace was built in 1926 by King Ferdinand of Romania for his English wife, Queen Maria, when Balchik was part of Greater Romania. In terms of size, it is a relatively modest villa, although the architecture – a mixture of local, Gothic and Islamic styles covered with a minaret – is unique. Behind the palace are large botanical gardens. The complex also includes a water mill, a wine cellar and a small chapel in Sveta Bogoroditsa known as “Stella Maris”. or “Star of the Sea”.

More than half of the rooms on display contain original furniture, including paintings by Queen Maria, and many photographs of the Queen in dramatic poses and striking made in this place. There is also a curious collection of local archeological discoveries, including Roman pottery and mammoth bones. In the garden, there are about 600 species of flowers, presented in a series of themed terraces, including an impressive collection of cacti.

Historical Museum in Balchik

The diverse collection here includes valuable remains from excavations at the nearby Kibela Temple (called the Temple of the Mother of the Pontic Gods at the museum), which dates from the 3rd century BC. and was buried in an earthquake 1500 years ago. It was discovered only in 2007 during the construction of a hotel. There are also Roman statues and medieval pottery, with lots of useful signs in English.

Balchik Art Gallery

The permanent collection of this gallery contains about 1500 works of art by Bulgarian and foreign artists, although the main attractions tend to be extremely interesting rotating exhibitions, such as a recent exhibition on Scythian coins.

Balchik Ethnographic Museum

This museum features folk costumes, household items and jewelery, as well as exhibitions of traditional crafts and crafts such as fishing, barrel making and wood carving.
